Discussion: We've currently got Vampires. What next?

Welcome to the first discussion on The Mile Long Bookshelf! Please comment with your own opinions on this topic. I'd like to know what you think!

Currently, the most popular genre out there right now is Vampires. Yeah. Thanks a bunch, Twilight. It's not that I don't approve of this book topic - of course I do, and I understand that millions and trillions of people LOVE this new take on the vampire world - but it's dragging on  a bit now.

What about the people who don't really like to read about vampires? There aren't many new books coming out that don't mention them. The Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer is a highly popular series of books and movies with teens and adults worldwide. Suddenly everyone became obsessed with vampires, angels and werewolves.

Me? I just don't get the obsession. I'm just waiting for the next genre to come along. But....what will it be? We've had real life. We've had comedy. We've had sadness. We've had sci-fi. We've had chick-lit. We've had horror.

Is this going to be the last genre? Like fashion. Fashion is just a big cycle - things that were popular back in the 80s are now coming back. Will the next genre be like that?

I'd like to know what you think. Do you like this genre? Opinions through comments, please!

  1. I LOVE Vampires. But then I also love other paranormal stuff like Angels, Faeries, Werewolves, as well as reading about real life situations.

I think it's great that we have a wide range of things to read. I think it's great that reading about Vampires has made so many more children/teenagers begin to start reading, because a few years ago, people used to look at me weirdly because I had my head stuck in a book all the time, but now it's different. There's a lot more people reading ad there's lots less of that 'looking down on people' just because they like to read.

  2. Thanks for your comment :)

Yes, I think it's great that there is a wide range of genres to choose from; it means there's something for everyone to enjoy. And it's brilliant that the vampire genre is encouraging so many people to read! :)

Keep commenting with your opinions, everyone!

  3. I get where you're coming from Amber - I'm beginning to think that whole Vamp scene is getting on a bit. I want to hear about more non-superstious novels, instead of the next 'bite-me' saga to hit the list!
It's great that there is a wide range of genres to choose from, so everyone is a winner, not just the odd few sections. Good post! :) x

  4. I think there are A LOT of books out there for anti-vampires [and the whole paranormal stuff].
And, like what Iffath said, Twilight got people reading. Girls in my class who don't really read picked up Twilight.
Heavenly has the angel theme in it, but it's also so thoughtful, sad, and beautiful.

I love the paranormal stuff and I doubt it will ever die. No genre really does.
    Great post!

  5. I'm not really that big a fan of the vampire genre I'm more an adventure genre girl. I hope that will be the next BIG book rage!
